Every 30 minutes, an Australian is diagnosed with melanoma.
Two decades ago, advanced melanoma was almost always fatal. Today, more than half of patients are alive thanks to breakthroughs in immunotherapy and targeted treatments.
At the Centenary Institute, Dr Jessamy Tiffen is pushing those breakthroughs even further. Her team is uncovering why men are more than twice as likely to die from melanoma — and whether the answer lies in the genes located on the X and Y chromosomes and the way they shape immune responses.
By uncovering the genetic and immune factors that drive treatment resistance, Dr Tiffen aims to unlock new, personalised treatments for men with melanoma and improve survival.
